Yes, you read that correctly. It is election day here in Duluth and our favorite fake radio show host has already cast his ballot. While he refuses to tell Ashley who he voted for, he does shock the world by encouraging his listeners to choose Beth Olson when they head to their polling places today. Why would he do this? What is the motivation? You'll just have to listen to find out. Not only that, but Danny reiterates his predictions on today's council races along with throwing out some more crazy theories about Becky Hall, Beth Olson supporters, and more.

But that's not all. Looks like the Northland NewsCenter is feeling some heat over an upcoming interview. DDD has the story along with out patented analysis.

Tomorrow is election day here in the Duluth. There are many races for city council and for school board that will all be determined by Duluthians filling in little ovals with ball-point pens. Today's DDD marks the first of a three part series where we'll discuss the various races and the results. On this show Danny reads the full version of his "Reader's View" letter which appeared in yesterday's edition of the DNT. Also, Ashley forces Danny to give some predictions on the At-Large race. The pair also manage to throw in a few digs at the moronic duo of Subdouche and "C" (who seem to now somehow think that Danny is the mastermind behind the Duluth Citizens Blog).

The race for the 2nd district City Council seat seems to be really heating up. Many questions have been left unanswered. Danny has decided to take today's show to offer another appearance for candidate for that seat, Robert Wagner. Today, Wagner answers a number of questions including his thoughts on the DNT's endorsement of his opponent, Boyle's no-show at the DNT's own candidate forum, accusations against Wagner about his true intentions in this race, and the fire department. It's a good conversation.

The mayor meets with Danny Golden?

Last year love-him or hate-him podcaster Danny Golden pulled a decent April Fool's prank, saying he did an extensive one-on-one interview with Mayor Don Ness, but instead played a recording of the Lew Latto show.

But Golden swears to me that he actually had drinks at Pizza Luce with the mayor on Monday night. And after listening to the podcast, I think I believe him. I think. (Burn me once, shame on you, burn me twice...)

Golden, who is generally conservative and has said some not so-nice-things about the mayor on his podcast in the past, said he got a message from the mayor via facebook (the two are facebook friends, and as a full disclosure, I'm Facebook friends with both of them) suggesting the two meet and talk politics.

I sent an email to the mayor asking if this actually took place, and he hasn't responded [UPDATE: see below]. But if it did, I find it incredibly interesting that the mayor took the time to meet with a guy who, well, talks to himself during his shows -- in the form of someone named "Ashley." And he's also someone who is loathed by many on local talk boards (personally, I don't think Danny is so bad, but then I won a "Danny award", so maybe I'm biased.)

I asked Danny if this was like the local version of Obama meeting with Rush Limbaugh.

"More like Barbara Walters and Pee Wee Herman. Take your pick who's who," he said.

What did he think of the mayor?

"He's a nice guy. He's a politician and it shows, but he's a nice guy. I wasn't really surprised. He graduated a year or two ahead of me from Central, but I graduated with his brother who was always a nice guy."

Did meeting the mayor change his opinion of him?

"Not really. But I think there's this perception that I don't like the guy. That couldnt be further from the truth. Just because I make fun of somebody on my moronic little podcast doesnt mean I hate their guts. I crack jokes about Dennis Anderson constantly and I think he rules.

I still have issues with the mayor, and those issues have not changed. But there's alot that I agreed with him on before I met him and those things were only solidified when I talked to him."

Any plans to have the mayor on his podcast?

"We'll see. If something was going on that interests me enough where it would be warranted, I might ask him. But honestly, I wouldnt expect the guy to bother with my dorky little fake radio show."

(As a sidenote: I'll allow anti-Danny comments in the message board for this post. But be warned: When I asked Danny how he'd respond to the haters, he responded, "you know I feed on that stuff.")

UPDATE: 9:30 a.m. The mayor writes:

Yeah, Danny, his wife, and I got together for a beer and a slice at Luce. It was a fun conversation - Danny and I went to school together at different times at Grant, Washington Jr, and Central so we mostly talked about common friends and that sort of thing. We talked a little about politics - but nothing too deep. A couple months ago I sent him a note offering to get together and he accepted. That's about it.

Alrighty. I'm not going to lie to you. This week is shaping up to be the biggest, most epic, definately most important, incredible week of Danny Does Duluth ever. Frankly, I appreciate the fact that you have sat back and listened to 92 episodes of what I have to admit are sub-par podcasting uselessness. But don't give up just yet. This week your pain and suffering will finally be rewarded. There will be two episodes this week as usual, but it will feel like many, many more. Tuesday's Episode 93 will likely feature myself and Ashley discussing "the date" that I've previously teased last week. Finally that mystery will be revealed. That might seem exciting enough, but Friday's Episode 94 is going to be the real money shot. Finally, FINALLY one of DDD's biggest detractors has agreed to step up to the plate and have a conversation with yours truly. That's right, Duluth's original Tony Ramone from dcbwatch.blogspot.com will be appearing on the show! I can't even say for sure what will happen when us two Titans of local media speak to each other, but I think it's a safe bet that there will be fireworks involved.

So get ready Northland. DDD is about to explode!

EPISODE 81 - Jay Cole, City Council Applicant

Recently on Danny Does Duluth we have been spending quite a bit of time discussing the process for picking the next Duluthian to fill the open council seat. We were lucky enough to have two brief conversations with two of the 35 applicants on past episodes, but today we spend the entire episode focusing on another with a bit of a controversial history. Jay Cole comes onto the show and talks about his qualifications for the job, the controversy in Two Harbors, his feelings on the Northland NewsCenter (and their recent reports on him) and more. I am officially getting old. I managed to see Oasis on Wednesday night in Minneapolis (great show, great seats) but I think spending two hours in a germ-filled arena has taken it's toll. I am a sick, sick puppy this morning. However, I am going to do my best to not let this illness stop me from putting out a fresh episode of Danny Does Duluth today. EPISODE 27 - An Interview With Mayor Don Ness

Finally, Danny Does Duluth gets the legitimacy that it so rightly deserves. This is a very, very different episode as we stray away from our normal fun and frivolity and conduct a serious, sit-down interview with current Duluth mayor Don Ness. The mayor was kind enough to give Danny 20 minutes of his time to answer questions on a number of topics important to the Northland. The discussion includes inquiries on the controversial school board Red Plan, issues of eminent domain, and the best ways to solve the retiree health-care debacle. Controversy also rears it's head in this interview as Danny asks Mr. Ness if he thinks that racism is a problem plaguing the city council. It even gets a bit personal as the mayor takes umbrage with Danny accusing Mr. Ness's wife of having no redeeming qualities on a previous episode of the show.

The entire episode is heavy, deep, and quite possibly the most open interview that Don Ness has given since being in the public eye. On a personal note, I really appreciate the fact that he would take the time to do this with me. All it took was a simple phone call and to me, that is very, very classy and a great way to show that he really cares about his constituants. The mayor is a very intriguing man, and it shows in this very intriguing interview.
